Oh John.

The swirling tornado of a news story that has consumed all footballing media outlets in the last few days is that John Terry has once again been stripped of his England Captaincy.  This follows the allegations of racial abuse directed towards QPR's Anton Ferdinand.

The captain of England's National team cannot be seen as a racist whether he innocent or guilty, a decision that will not be decided for some 9 months following his trial. Furthermore is Terry will not be eligible to captain England come this summer European Championships in Poland and Ukraine. It's really funny how England always seem to but themselves in it right before a tournament though there still is some time.

Possible replacement Rio Ferdinand, the brother of  the "abused, " Anton has come out to day via twitter  saying he will not enter the running for the England captaincy. If Rio where to take this mantle,  I would be dumbfounded, not to mention astounded if conspiracy theories don't start to fly.

Expanding on the racism theme Luis Suarez will be available for Liverpool's clash with Tottenham on Monday.

Luis Suarez does it for Uruguay with 4 goals

In this weekends South American World Cup Qualifying action Uruguay tonked Chile 4-0, thanks to the Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, netting all 4 goals. Having issues with his finishing for the Reds of late , the slick forward seems to have no issues doing it for his country.

Disclaimer: Be aware that the announcers basically yell Gooooooooaaalll...the entire video.

So so dirrrty is Luis Suarez's goal against Stoke

In my last  Liver n' Onions I expressed my displeasure with the slurry of missed chances that Liverpool and more so Luis Suarez flubbed against Norwich City in their 1-1 draw last weekend. As a devoted reader of this blog SpotKickJournalism, Suarez clearly read that post and responded with one of the filthiest goals I have ever seen bar- none. First he nutmegs the Stoke defender than hits a deft curler past the outstretched Sorenson.

Ooooh My Gooooal! Absolutely nuts. Check the vid below and prepare a change of underpants.

So sick... to add Suarez netted again boosting Liverpool into the quarterfinals of the Carling Cup winning 2-1 over Stoke City.

Luis Suarez is pure BRILLIANCE!

Had to watch this feat of pure skillage again just for the fact it is pure brilliance. Taking precaution that I don't break my keyboard due to the drool that automatically secretes from my mouth upon viewing. After punting Man U in the last post I had to shove it right back into their face with this "un-doing," including 2 nutmegs, Raphael and Van der sar succeeded by a  Kuyt tap in...Brilliant

Liver n'Onions Survives The International Break...Barely

Putting on my Liverpool kit circa 2008 I am reminded of the roller-coaster ride of a season that saw us secure the second spot just 4 points behind Manchester United. That and the fact I haven't washed it for some time, but I digress. The ritualistic activity of wearing this kit as I sit down to write about the club I love, seems to percolate my creative juices even more, necessary when coping with a week of International play.

Liverpool face a Stoke City fresh with new talent after a successful transfer window this coming weekend.  For the upcoming match I wouldn't expect to see any real changes to the line-up that  tormented Bolton on the final weekend of August. Suarez will most likely start up top supported by Dirk Kuyt, forcing Andy Carroll to sit, due to his lack of form. Just this last week international manage Fabio Capello has called out the 35 Million pound striker for his drinking habits and off field antics. Saying " He needs to be careful because he's an important player for England and Liverpool, If he wants to be a good player and a good sportsman, he needs to drink less than the others." A move of intent from the often soft England manager, made a statement by not selecting him at all for their recent game against Bulgaria. In all honesty Carroll does not warrant a place on the England bench as he has been less than mediocre when vying on the Anfield pitch, so the inclusion in the squad ageist Wales was a surprise to me. Oh but it's all good because  JT has come out to praise struggling Carroll, saying " I've been there, and have made my mistakes." The model professional that is John Terry recognizes the difficulty that some one at Carroll's tender age has in focusing on his job, with all the perks of being a professional footballer. I say  Grow-Up. Earn your price tag Andy! When bought for that amount you owe it to your club to train hard and devote yourself entirely.  If he can't cope with the distractions of being a professional footballer, dislodging his head from his shoulders, then he deserves his place on the bench. As a fan I remain unconvinced  and wait to see him prove his worth.
As Carroll struggles to fit into the renaissance happening under King Kenny, fellow new-boy Stewart Downing has been a stroke of inventiveness on the wing, shining  In England's match against Wales yesterday, setting up Ashley Young's 35th minute goal. Carroll must seek guidance from fellow England International and level his head. I want to bring up a few of Carroll's potential high and low lights in the Red of Liverpool. so in his best interest I will rely on the solid bedrock of the old Pros and Cons.  This segment will be known as SpotKick's "Carroll" - oscopy:

PROS:

Strong build and height adds a powerful presence up-top, allowing for surrounding players to run on to knock downs and head-ons. Theoretically Carroll should be a huge target for Reina's cosmic kicks, but this has yet to be successful.

Aggression: simply fearless in the box, making more than 50% of headers his when present, body checks and an unbridled desire to win.

Powerful left foot shot shown in his debut v. Man City last year thundering one past Joe Hart in Liverpools  convincing win.

He's young. Really a pro and a con.  A Pro for the massive promise for club and country, with plenty room to get even better. A Con in all the things that come with youth. Drinking, partying, not focusing on fitness…you name it.

CONS:

When Carroll is on the pitch he changes the way that Liverpool play,  which is something you hope of any player, but in the case of Carroll it's for the worse. Being a target man, he dosent really fit into the fluid-tivity of Liverpool's attack headed by Suarez. Everyone is moving with  Downing swapping wings with Henderson or Kuyt, Carroll's position tends to get lost in the middle.

Liverpool tend to play long ball when Carroll is playing, which is not in their nature and in what I have seen doesn't work well at all.

Kuyt has looked fantastic linking up with Suarez, so the addition of Carroll pushes Kuyt out to the wing, restricting this link up. A player with the engine of the Dutch workhorse can motor all over the place so he will not get lost, but the link up Suarez and Carroll is yet to be determined.

Along with my last point the combination of Big man, Small man has been a tried and true formula for success from Di Stefano and Puskas to the most apparent Ian Rush and Kenny Dalgleish in the 1980's. This clear link should not build a false sense of hope for Liverpool fans, for the Suarez- Carroll partnership is promising but to bet your house on it mirroring the fore-mentioned ones would be unwise.

Carroll has been struggling with fitness so there is a bit of ambiguity in assessing his impact, but It just seems that the team is much more creative with Suarez as the focal point in attack.

Continuing to look froward in the business sense Liverpool's director of football Damien Comolli has been mustering up a deal with Uruguayan side Nacional, after recognizing the talent abundant in Uruguay. In my last Liver n' Onions post I addressed the signing of defender Sebastian Coates from Nacional, the first example of this deal in action so to speak. Liverpool are looking to establish a partnership offer the next 4 of 5 years, growing the sides academy and developing footballing standards, giving Liverpool the pick of the bunch in signing some.  The Merseyside club now has two players from the Nacional academy, in Coates and Suarez making Liverpool that much more of an attractive destination for Uruguayans to apply their trade.

Next week I will preview the return of skipper Stevie G ( - insert Darth Vader Theme here- ) as he targets the game against Tottenham to mark his return.

Liver N'Onions week of 8/22

Your Liver:

On paper its looks a good result for Liverpool,  2-0 win against Arsenal, though be it a struggling Arsenal. If you are like me -devoted- staying up for kickoff at 1pm hawaiian pacific time, or 4am on the west coast, you would know it was anything but. Two dodgy goals saved Liverpool fans from another speed bump in their seasons takeoff, but the brace exists as only as a blanket, covering their blemishes.

A wins, a win, and it was this that saved Liverpool from further scrutiny. The started as an exciting spectacle with Wenger playing a youthful midfield, more by restriction than choice. Frimpong added some youthful steel to the midfield in which youth and the decisions that come with it earned him a sight at red. Suarez sat from the beginning with Kenny giving him the most rest possible after a long summer of football. When brought on the  major realization for me and hopefully the world over, of how absolutely key Luis Suarez, is to this team was plain to see. When introduced midway into the second half, the light bulbs were a-flashing over the heads of the reds, acting as the catalyst to all things good for the merseyside club. Before this the midfield of Henderson, and Adam  looked solid against the soft Arsenal center, but still lacked that creative spark. Suarez's movement is second to none, and with the introduction Meireles from the bench spoke of his importance to the team as well. He must start for me! He had a fantastic  last season, and his importance was cemented at the Emirates. In my mind it's a case of Dalgleish playing favorites. He brought in these new English boys and he wants to play them. There're are two classy players sitting on the bench, with limited shots in proving they belong in the team from the start. I have spoke of Meireles and you know how I feel on that subject. The second is Alberto Aquilani. Rumors this week preach interest from AC Milan, which might actually be a go vs. the  roller coaster  summer of transfer links associated with the Italian.  The player who at Liverpool, failed to impress, though chances were limited due to injury and lack of form, rendering him with the price tag, a flop. I say Give him a shot! This summer he looked hungry, wether prove himself at Liverpool or to put himself in the shop window is unclear but the taste for games is there.

Your Onions:

More Rumors this week coming from Italy is the re-emerging like between Dirk Kuyt and Inter Milan.  The blue collar Dutchman works tirelessly for Liverpool and his departure would not be a welcomed one. As an elder statesman up-top, his experience is key and is a figure to look up to from the youthful Carroll and Henderson.  Starting roles may be scarce, but this aging utility man will give 358% what ever position he is put in.

Other rumors come in the shape of EPL new-boys QPR, pursing a loan move for shabby shabby Joe Cole. Cole has strait up disappointed at Liverpool!  Out of form, shape, mindset…you name it. Has had limited playing time as well, but when given a shot to do anything good he  has absolutely failed. Get him out, and playing football. A Loan move would be the best option as  he racks up some  regular time, and manages to increase his stock, Liverpool can sell him for a higher price.  At a team like QPR that frankly will need all the help they can get, Joe can play some foot and come seasons end  Dalgleish can asses wether he's worth keeping.

After the Merciless Meireles  set up Suarez for the second goal, cameras caught the radical misfit flipping Lucas the bird, then poppin a grin….next time it will be the kiss from the Godfather, " I know it was you, and It warms my heart!" Was it a joke? Who cares? There needs to be some bite.

A brace from Michael Bolton look-a-like Diego Forlan, and one from Luis Suarez seals the Copa America Final for the La Celeste. Uruguay have continued their international run of success from the World Cup, beating Paraguay 3-0, winning a recored 15th Copa America title. An outfit playing fantastic football and looking at the moment like giving any team they face a hiding.

Uruguay Reach Final After Defeating Peru 2-0 In Copa America

A brace from Luis Suarez saw Uruguay defeat Peru advancing them to the Copa America Final. After heavy-hitters Brazil, Chile and hosts Argentina get eliminated, the tournament surely seems Uruguay's to lose. They will face the winners of the Venezuela vs. Paraguay semi, that will play today. I am happy to see Uruguay continue their International success from the World Cup last year. One of my greatest sporting predictions was that Uruguay would do well in the South Africa. I had them getting third place, but the Germans claimed that. They were my dark-horse and I continue to want to see them do well in world football, so I will be urging them to claim ultimate glory on rival's soil.
